About the Program

We are pleased to offer you an expanded opportunity to boost your education and certification (recognition) to a higher level. Now that you have a basic yoga education, experience with practice, and a start with teaching, here is a unique opportunity to dive deeper. You will study with other professional teachers in an intimate program specifically designed for the intermediate practitioner. As we continually create greater awareness and joy in ourselves, it is important for us to stretch our abilities in guiding others to expand, too.

Fueled by the power of our own yoga practice, and the delight of sharing it with others, our mission evolves into living with greater heart and truth. As we do so, we automatically transmit that to the world around us. Custom designed for those who teach yoga, though valuable for those who don’t, the Expanded (500 hour) Advanced Study/ Teacher Training modules synthesize a blend of dynamic components to create a total experience. Exploring the deeper aspects of Yoga, with a focus on meditation, yoga philosophy, pranayama, asana, yoga therapy, refinement of teaching skills, communication and personal spiritual growth, it involves 300 hours of coursework beyond the 200 hour training.

The 500-hour training is modular in format. Each of the individual modules stands alone as a complete experience, and several elective modules may be combined to meet the requirements for the Yoga Alliance 500 hour training (see minimum requirements below). Most modules are weekend formats held at Yoga Loka. Some modules will be one evening a week for 6-8 weeks at Yoga Loka. There will be one 5-day residential retreat module that will be held in a lovely setting 30 minutes outside of Reno. The modules will fall into one of the following categories:

1. Required modules
2. Elective modules
3. Teaching experience
4. Final Teaching Practicum

Together we create a Yogic environment for learning and transformation: a community of like-minded individuals who support one another in living our true potential. There’s a saying: 'the truth cannot be said.' It can, however, be heard. The truth is inherent in each of us. It's who we are. The essence of yoga is remembering who we are. The modules create conditions where the truth can be heard, through challenging asana (posture), vinyasa (breath and movement), spiritual insight, pranayama (breath exercise), meditation, music, and humor.

If your goal is to deepen your understanding of yoga - without necessarily committing to teaching or to becoming fully certified - you may take any of the individual modules offered in our Advanced Studies & Teacher Training Program as “non-credit” or “continuing education” (CE credits). CE credits will be available for Yoga Teachers, Marriage and Family Therapists, Clinical Professional Counselors, Social Workers, Massage Therapists and Nurses, depending on the course.

The 500-hour certification program (300 hours beyond the 200 hours course) can be completed in one year. To receive a Certificate of Completion, the entire program must be completed within 3 years of being accepted into the program. The faculty and module topics are subject to change from year to year, and the total cost of the program depends upon which Elective Modules are chosen.

Requirements:

Students must have completed the Yoga Loka 200 hour Advanced Study and Teacher Training program or demonstrate/document a comparable level of experience.

Transfer Students:

If you are a Yoga Alliance RYT200 from another school, you may transfer into Yoga Loka’s 500 hour certification training after a consultation with the primary teacher. There may be some transition work required to catch you up to speed depending on what your 200-hour course included and didn’t include. Please include a copy of your 200-hour certificate with your application.

*If you ARE NOT a graduate from the Yoga Loka 200 hour Teacher Training Course, you are required to purchase the 200 hour Yoga Loka Training Manual TO REVIEW BEFORE STARTING THE TRAINING. PAYMENT DETAILS can be found UNDER the INVESTMENT SECTION.

1. Feet, Knees, Hips, and Low-Back
Many people don't realize that the way they stand and walk affects their spine and posture and that strengthening the arches can optimize one's way of walking and standing. This workshop addresses the foundations of healthy arches, gait pattern, and chronic low back pain that may be stemming from flattened arches. We will cover the four corners of the feet and proper alignment in standing yoga poses. Strengthening exercises including small foot will be taught to assist the student in rebuilding healthy arches. The whole lower kinematic chain and gait analysis will reveal how the joints of the lower limb effect each other. Horse Pose, Downward facing Dog, and balance poses will elucidate biomechanical principles of the lower extremity.

2. How to be Hard Core
This workshop focuses on the muscles and functional anatomy of the lower back, abdomen, and pelvis. Included are discussion, demonstration and movement exercises that help to restore optimal alignment to this integral region of the body. Included are several asanas that target core musculature like bridge pose, plank, dolphin, etc. We will cover healthy ways to recruit the core and link asanas with breathe while maintaining core support through a yoga practice.

3. The Vibrant Spine
This is an embodied workshop spotlighting the human spine and the guiding, supportive soft tissue structures that maintain our living backbone. We will cover the structural anatomy and muscular supports of the key regions of the spine as well as energetic components of the spine including the chakras, bandhas, and nadis. There will be physical asanas linked to each chakra as well as bija mantras.

4. The Ring of Fire: Shoulders, Chest, Upper Back, and the Breath
This workshop is intended for yoga instructors to aid the myriad of service professionals that work with their arms outstretched in front of them, those that slouch, and consequently, may be affected by poor posture. We will cover the anatomy and biomechanics of these regions and explore functional movements between these different regions. Proper alignment will be taught utilizing Mountain Pose and Downward Facing Dog. Breath work will incorporate both ujjayi and Breath of Fire. Anatomical correlations will be made between the thoracic spine, drishti, and mechanics of breath to assist the yogi in asana practice.

5. The Neurology of Posture
This workshop will cover Posture and Neurology with special emphasis on the Cervical Spine. We will cover muscle anatomy and biomechanics highlighting the gamma motor system. A working knowledge of this system allows an understanding of the importance of stretching on muscular tissues and how these stresses create flexibility in the muscular system. Using models of the spine and handouts we will cover the structural relationship between the spinal column and the spinal cord and peripheral nerves. A biomechanical perspective on posture will set the foundation for understanding postural muscles like the multifidus and rhomboids and their importance in creating strength and efficiency in posture. We will cover the structure and biochemistry of neurons and how to optimize their function through nutrition and supplementation. Handouts, stretches, and movement sequences will be provided.

6. Creating Optimal Digestive Health
A Dynamic Anatomy Workshop combining yoga postures, healthy food preparations, and two educational lectures on how and why to create a functional and healthy digestive system. Dr. Taylor Donovan shares insights on gut physiology and longevity eating practices. Yoga asana practice includes twists and inversions targeting the digestive and lymphatic systems of the body.

Most of us are not professional psychotherapists, but in our spiritually evolving world, our students, clients, patients, friends and family are asking to give guidance that goes far beyond the body and way past the mind – to the place of the mind-body connection. This kind of communication is both a skill and an art – it can and it should be taught. You’ll learn active listening and reflective feedback techniques, and a mini-integration formula to help sort out issues and come to empowered insights.

* BEGINNING Level 1 LEVEL 1 IS REQUIRED

higher expectations than Level 1.

* MINDFULNESS IN THE 8 LIMBS OF YOGA
with Denise Barclay
Saturday, April 3 12:30-6:30 p.m.
Investment: $78 early; $90 later

This workshop focuses on a deeper understanding of mindfulness and how to cultivate it. By developing the practice of mindfulness this can be helpful in maintaining balance between the physical body, mental body and emotional body. Most of us feel more comfortable in one or two of these areas while avoiding the other or at best minimizing it. I have been to yoga retreats where the participants had a deep connection to their physical bodies, but were uncomfortable with being still. I have been to meditation retreats where the participants had a deep connection with stillness, but were uncomfortable with their physical bodies. And after years of teaching, most students will mention both the physical and sometimes the mental, but rarely and apologetically the emotional body. Through the filter of mindfulness we will explore all three bodies and through acknowledgement and acceptance of our comforts and discomforts, will work with them to uncover what has always been there, equanimity and balance.

“It takes a cup of understanding, a barrel of love, and an ocean of patience.” Jack Kornfield

This workshop will include:
* Lecture – Talk about how mindfulness relates to
the 8 limbs and how avidya keeps us from seeing
things clearly.
* Asana Practice – to prepare the mind/body to
sit in meditation.
* Pranayama Technique – to assist the energy to
flow more efficiently within the body and as a
preparation for meditation.
* Meditation Technique – practice pratyahara or
withdrawing from the senses and observe in
stillness by sitting and focusing on the breath.

* 5-DAY RESIDENTIAL YOGA RETREAT
with Kim Orenstein
August 10-15, 2010
47 Contact hours
Investment: approx. $1200 includes room, board and tuition

You can only teach through experience. If you want to know yoga you must engage or embrace some sort of personal transformation. This retreat will help you do that. There is nothing more conducive to the learning and understanding of a yogic state than withdrawing from habitual surroundings and busy schedules, and immersion into an opportunity to glimpse a truth larger than our self-definitions allow. Wake up to a morning asana practice followed by breakfast. Drop into mediation and traditional yoga philosophy, play on the asana playground of technique and adjustments, discuss and contemplate teacher/student relationships, breathe deep with pranayama and chakra practices. Fill your free time developing new relationships, find a quiet corner to continue your study, or catch an extra savasana. Evenings will be filled with kirtans, yin & restorative yoga plus ecstatic trance dances. A week no committed yogini or yogi will want to miss! Room and board are included in the tuition.

* KARMA YOGA SADHANA PROJECT

Karma yoga is unselfish generosity. Sadhana translates as practice. This project will allow you to practice the “yoga of action” by finding an underserved population to share the experience of yoga with. Examples of underserved populations might be homeless, at risk kids, low income, school teachers, an organization’s volunteers, nursing home staff, unemployed. Connect with a group through appropriate channels and arrange to teach at least four classes for them (unpaid, of course).

* REQUIRED READING & WRITING

Yoga Philosophy and History by Georg Feurestein (need to purchase this from Kim)
Complete all end of chapter self-tests. Choose at least two Classroom Work/Homework scenarios and share your ideas in writing (minimum of one double spaced page, 12 point font, for each scenario). It can be helpful to get together with other students to discuss before writing.

Teaching Yoga by Donna Farhi

BACK CARE YOGA
With Kim Orenstein
Contact hours: 9 + 4 non-contact hours
Wednesdays 3:45-5:15 p.m. for six weeks
January 13 – February 17 2010
Required Reading assignment: Healing Back Pain or MindBody Prescription by John Sarno plus a two page written essay of how his ideas could or could not be appropriate for yoga students.

A recent research study showed how yoga was more effective in pain reduction and lasting effects than conventional therapeutic exercise. Education about the spine, how it works and how to protect it, can be the most important and cost effective method in treating back pain. Many patients prefer to find a "quick fix" to the problem but unfortunately, there really aren't any. The best long-term solution involves education and lifestyle modification. The most effective manager of back pain is the patient. No one is more motivated and no one has more responsibility for managing back pain than the patient.

This series of yoga classes will address the aches and pains of the back (upper and lower), neck, shoulders and hips. The therapeutic based yoga practice used in the NIH study along with you teaching proper postural alignment, efficient ways to move and breathe plus relaxation techniques all help reduce current discomfort and prevent future back pain. The class will be open to students living with back pain, so opportunities for observing and assisting will be available.

After a balanced cleanse, people often experience fewer aches and pains, improved digestion, better energy, calmer minds, better skin, loss of excess weight, a deeper connection with themselves, and a sense of empowerment that comes from taking their health in their own hands.

It is remarkable how positively the body responds when we give it a chance. YOGA FOR THE CHAKRAS

Investment: $175 before Jan 1, 2010; $210 after
Required Reading: Western Body Eastern Minds by Anodea Judith

In Western society we tend to focus on the physical body and the mind while ignoring the subtle body and the spirit; however, in studying the chakras and how their influence manifests in the physical, psychological and subtle realms we realize that we are integrated beings.

This series is an exploration of the development and function of the chakras as they relate to physical practice, psychology and consciousness. Each two-hour session will use mantras, mudras, asanas, guided meditation, study and discussion to build understanding and connect to the energy of each chakra in turn. The final session will include a practice to integrate upward and downward flows of energy through the entire chakra system. The inspiration for this series comes from the book “Eastern Body, Western Mind: Psychology and the Chakra System as a Path to the Self” by Anodea Judith.

Study the relationship of chakras to physical nerve plexus, parts of the physical body governed by chakras, relationship between energy, psychology and posture/physical sensations, effects of excessive and deficient chakras on body and mind, nadis, etc. Much of this will come along with the physical practice. Discuss the subtle body and the idea of the ‘rainbow bridge’ creating a link between physical experience and pure consciousness. The upward journey is transformative, and we bring that transformed energy back to manifest in the world.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS : Using Numerology for Self Discovery and Empowerment™

Numerology (using numbers as a forecasting system) is more science than speculation in reality. Pythagoras originally codified the numerology methods used to foretell outcomes and predict behaviors in contemporary practice. As a contemplative art, numerology can be used to help you understand why you are the way you are, your destiny, your life path, how your soul operates and how your personality shows up day-to-day. Come see how your numbers add up and what they say about who you really are.

YOGA AND JOURNALING : The Body as Living Text™
with JJ Lee
Contact hours: approx approx 4-6
Dates and times to be determined

So much of our time is spent hurrying from event to event that we can fail to notice the history that is taking place in our own lives. Getting somewhere replaces being here; rushing replaces sensing, feeling and experiencing; we become human doings instead of human beings. Joining yoga with journaling creates a rare condition for you to be present in your body so that your mind can slow down, allowing its messages, desires and dreams to be recognized. This state creates an opportunity for reflection and integration. Using a journal at this peak time allows you to deepen your self-knowledge and naturally live more authentically and powerfully.
