Yoga and relaxation
Techniques for Relaxation
When little or no energy is used by the body it can experience a true form of relaxation. This relaxation is necessary for the body to recharge itself. Every action a person takes, whether it is conscious or unconscious, uses energy. In order to maintain good health and peace of mind, you need relaxation. When you do not get the rest and relaxation you need, your body and mind are overworked and you will start to lose your ability to function efficiently. Yoga can help you relax and function more efficiently throughout your day.
Relaxation of the Physical Body
You can increase your energy levels with exercise, but this is futile if you keep your muscles constantly in a state of readiness even when there is no need for them to be. People who have trained their muscles to be tense at all times have trouble relaxing even at night. This is a constant drain of the body's energy.
Yoga poses, or asanas, can teach you to retrain your muscles so that you are able to relax. By practicing asanas some people feel more rested with less sleep. This is explained by the simple fact that people who practice yoga can lie down and quickly fall into a deep, sound sleep. While light sleep actually uses energy, the deep form of sleep rejuvenates the mind and body.
Relaxation for the Mind
The mind can become exhausted and overloaded by a constant stream of stimuli. Even when we are not conscious of it the worrying that we do is using remarkable amounts of energy. The pressure that worries, either imagined or real, puts on our bodies can use up more of our precious energy than even physical work.
When these worries get out of control our energy resources are quickly depleted. Wear and tear on our physical health can even occur from the resulting mental fatigue. We need time everyday for our minds to unwind and recoup lost energy.
If you start to experience mental tension, begin concentrating on your breath and try breathing in a slow and rhythmic pattern for a few minutes. These yoga breathing exercises take a conscious effort, but you will gain the ability to calm your mind using thought power. Inner peace follows as you enter a state of both physical and mental relaxation.
