Yoga assists triathletes
Yoga as we all know is a very powerful and transformational tool for life. It has the ability to lift the spirits but also to transform the body and reawaken wellbeing previously left dormant.
Many sports men and women from around the globe are slowly waking up to the fact that yoga can help them in their chosen field of sport.
One such woman is triathlete Belinda Halloran from Australia. She has had two babies since her career peak but feels better than ever before. Thanking yoga for that is why.
Previously she was spending up to 6 to 8 hours in the gym, working out, building her muscles and they did build. She found she was over burdened by muscle and that was not helping her in her sport. Since this time she has swapped her gym and weights routines for a 1 hour yoga session daily. Short and sweet and very effective. The strength she is building is perfect for her triathlon competition. Her core strength is stronger and leaner and takes her through the ending and tiring part of the competition.
Yoga has the ability and it is wonderful to witness that it can streamline the muscles of the body. Like Belinda, I was once a chunky muscled girl. My muscles had bulked up due to cross country running and I felt that I had too much muscle for what I needed.
Yoga has transformed myself and Belinda and millions of other people like us around the world. Belinda now looks more like a ballet dancer than a meaty triathlete and she feels great.
Yoga not only helps in her sporting field but allows her the ability to control the stress in her life. A busy mum of two with a husband, it can seem as though the day needs to be longer to achieve all she sets for herself.
“Yoga teaches you to control the stress in your life that you often can’t control”, she says in the Sydney Morning Herald. Keeping everyone happy and then yourself is not always possible and we should all try and remember that.
Yoga is all about awakening the spirit within and helping the body to achieve clarity and functionality. Core strength, mindfulness happening and a happy family at home. It is no wonder she is now doing better and enjoying her competitions than ever before.
The ability to surrender to a particular yoga pose helps many athletes and Belinda included. Once you learn to surrender to the breath and the position you find yourself in, all will fall away and you will be left with only yourself. In a competition it is vitally important to be able to focus on yourself only and not worry what the others are doing. That way you can put your whole intention and energy into your own efforts. Yoga helps to calm the mind and provides focus, energy and clarity. Use it well, the next competition is just around the corner...
