Yoga Gear

You can practice yoga without any gear or equipment, but many people do make the choice to invest in some supplies to make their home yoga practice more satisfying. There is basic equipment like yoga mats and then there are supportive tools like belts, blocks and bolsters. The final group is specialized tools used for specific poses.

A good yoga mat is essential, but you can use a cotton rug or towel as long as it is not slippery. The mat is used to help a practitioner grip as they move through poses. A good mat is the best way to do this, but if you are short on money you can make due with what you have. Mats are generally inexpensive with sticky mats being the least expensive and higher quality synthetic mats being the most expensive. You should hand wash your mat this will keep it in good condition for a long time.

Supportive gear is used to help people with physical restrictions experience poses that they usually would not be able to do. They help a person align their body properly and explore the subtleties of the poses. Supportive gear includes wall ropes, chairs, belts, bolsters and blocks.

You can use bolsters for floor poses and to help support the back. Blocks are useful for standing poses when the student cannot reach the ground on their own. Blocks are really good for poses that involve a twisting motion. Belts can be used for poses like forward bends. Using supportive tools can give you time to really work on a pose.

The most expensive props are the very specialized ones. They are used for backbends and headstands. You can replace these expensive props with less expensive tools. If you really need them, or you are really serious about your practice it may be worth the investment.

One way to make yoga more enjoyable is to add props. There is a luxury of time available when you practice at home. Using props to extend your poses makes them more gratifying. Props can enhance your practice, but how much you buy is your decision.
