Yoga props for beginners

Yoga props for beginners

It is your first yoga class and your friends are all using words like mats, blocks and straps. Is this some form of yoga code? It is not, what they are referring to is yoga props. This is equipment that is used in classes and home practice that is meant to enhance your yoga practice.

Before starting your yoga practice you need to find a good yoga mat, or sticky mat. It should be lightweight for easy carrying. The mat should also hold up to repeated cleanings. This does not mean that you throw your mat in the washing machine, though. One way to clean it is to wipe it down with vinegar and water after each use and let it air dry. Yoga mats accumulate germ easily, so make sure that you wash it after each class or session. Make sure that you will not slip while you are using it and that it remains sticky after you sweat on it.

Yoga mats can range in cost from $5 all the way up to $200 or more. When it comes to yoga mats you get what you pay for. So, if you are serious about yoga then spend as much on a good mat as you can afford. You may also want to purchase two mats in case you need extra cushioning.

Yoga Props

There are also props to assist you with stretching. Props can help a person go deeper and hold a pose longer when they are not as flexible. Props can help practitioners align their bodies correctly and reduce strain on muscles and joints.

Straps allow a person to get a more intense stretch in the legs or upper body. They can also be used with strengthening and balance. These straps can be purchased in all sizes and materials.

Blocks come in many shapes and sizes. They are used to modify advanced poses and can correct body placement.

A bolster is a long firm pillow like prop. They are used during relaxation poses and meditation. Bolsters can also be very helpful for women who practice during pregnancy.

Before you start using props make sure you fully understand how they are supposed to work. You can ask a yoga instructor to demonstrate proper usage if you are not sure how to use them properly.
